Brigitte Chertok
Beginning a new chapter in her life, Brigitte started making ceramic sculptures in 2019. She loves the rhythms and processes of working with clay in her hands and its endless different techniques for building each sculpture. Always amazed by the wide range of different techniques and finishes, Brigitte found her perfect medium and enjoys experimenting with her work.
Brigitte fell in love with the Raku process after taking a week long workshop in France. Raku allows for experimenting with the four elements, and is a constant search for an elusive unknown and a perfect outcome. It's like cooking, she can watch the glaze melt in the kiln and decide when to stop firing. When the glaze has matured, it emits a lovely orange glow. The Raku finish gives a lively look to my animals. The unpredictability of Raku is very exciting, and on the contrary can be disappointing, but it is part of the art of imperfection.
Brigitte started selling her work at the gallery cooperative, The Artery, located in Davis California, in 2020, and became a manager of The Artery in 2023. Hoping to expand the gallery to new audiences and engage the community, Brigitte has become the lead organizer and coordinator for the monthly art events and workshops taking place on G Street through the end of 2024.
Brigitte has an upcoming exhibition in October of this year, at the Artery Gallery, which focuses on the art of Naked Raku firing, and more pieces surrounding the art of imperfection.
