Lorna Miser - Upcycled Fashions
Lisa M. Erskine, MFA - Weavings

July 5 - 26, 2025
Reception Friday, July 11, 6 - 9 pm

Lorna Miser’s work beautifully stitches together artistry, function, and sustainability. Drawing from an eclectic palette of reclaimed materials—vintage quilts, denim, bicycle inner tubes, upholstery remnants, and more—she creates durable, fashion-forward bags with character and conscience. Crafted on machines ranging from modern tools to a 60-year-old military-grade industrial model, each piece is uniquely practical and visually striking.

Lorna’s creativity extends to three-dimensional textile wall art, where fabric scraps become vivid scenes of bicycles in front of beloved local landmarks. Trees, leaves, and buildings rise from the canvas, bringing familiar bike trails to life with texture and movement. Miser’s work is art you can carry or hang on your wall—and a celebration of sustainable, soulful design.

Lorna Miser’s lifelong love of textiles began with her grandmother, who taught her to sew, knit, and crochet. In the late '80s, she founded the beloved yarn company Lorna’s Laces and continued designing knit and crochet patterns until 2022.

With the challenges of the pandemic, Lorna returned to her sewing roots—this time with a focus on sustainability. Using rescued materials like vintage curtains, quilts, jeans, tablecloths, upholstery remnants, and bicycle inner tubes, she crafts durable, functional, and stylish bags.

Each bag is a unique work of functional art. Some are designed for biking, others for everyday use—school, shopping, or as purses. All feature upcycled inner tubes and thoughtfully chosen fabrics.

Detail

Lisa loves to recycle to help with our number one problem that we all share: Climate Change.   She does the few things she can and one of them is collecting cloth from bedspreads, jeans in particular, other cloth items that would be turned into rags and then thrown out into pieces of functional art.

Theses rag rugs will warm the feet or walls of  people who want to reduce their carbon footprint.  This show will be up at The Artery from June 2- July 3rd.  Our summers have been filled with dread of fire and lack of water.   The work inspires the colors of moisture and growth that can occur during our summer months.

The show is filled with a very wide sampling of weaving techniques and functions. From tabby to Doubleweave Pick Up, Weft Brocade, painted and dyed yarns is created an environment of moisture and sun, colors warmth and cool.
