Julie Friesen was first drawn to mosaics when she took a class at the UC Davis Craft Center in 2002 with the intent of finding an afterwork activity. This led to a passion for mosaics as an artistic expression. Initially her workspace was a door on two sawhorses for a table in her carport. As her artistic practice expanded, she was able to incorporate a studio into her home, and seriously have fun with this medium.
Her work incorporates stained glass, glass tile, beads and found objects working in both realism and abstractism. Each piece is created with inspiration by an emotion, nature, or a celebration of the human spirit. Some works have an extensive story to tell, others a simple expression or moment in time. Her work is a union of the depth and beauty of glass, and possibly a new home for jewelry or a found object. Her hope is to bring happiness, joy, or a sense of whimsy to the world.
She has studied mosaics at the Institute of Mosaic Art in Oakland, and attended workshops at Society of American Mosaic Artists conferences. Her earlier art education includes a BS in Interior Design from UC Davis. She has served on the Woodland Healthcare art committee.
