Contained: The Art of Stillness
A Solo Exhibition by Louise McGowan Bezark
January 3-27, 2025
Reception, Friday, January 10, 5-8 pm
Artist Talk, Saturday January 4, 11 am
The Artery presents Contained: The Art of Stillness featuring a solo exhibition by Louise McGowan Bezark. This exhibition runs from January 3 to 27, with the reception on Friday, January 10, from 5-8 pm. Louise will give an artist talk on Saturday, January 4 at 11 am.
With a spiritual leaning that bridges Eastern and Western philosophy, each piece in this exhibition contains heart and soul. Art reflects life…a return to decades long practices of meditation, silence and contemplation are reflected in this collection. Between 3D sculptures and framed pieces, it is Louise’s desire that the viewer remember a bit of peace and stillness as they stop into the gallery in the new year.

dis)continuity: what we hold, what we've lost, and what we choose to change
Ro Mottsmith & Elyse Doyle-Martinez
January 31– February 24
Reception: Friday, February 14, 6-9pm
About the Exhbition
(dis)continuity explores the artists’ relationship to their mixed Mexican and American roots and how they influence how the artists move through the world today. When two cultures collide, there are some things we hold on to, some things we lose, and some things we choose to change. For Elyse and Ro, what we hold on to often shows up in the food we cook, the values we uphold, the labor we perform, and the art that inspires us. The loss may sometimes happen through how our history is taught so narrowly to us in schools, by centuries of systems that forcibly suppressed cultural expression, or just by time passing and things changing. But we are also confronted with the opportunity to change, to choose how we move forward as individuals who are part of a broadermcultural exchange. In this show, the artists reflect on their personal journeys of understanding their roots and how they navigate the present.
About the Artists
Ro Mottsmith is mixed Mexican and American artist creating vibrant works in paper and clay. Ro calls their paper art Papel Pic-Arte, which derives its name from the classic Mexican folk art of papel picado, but reflects how they have strayed from tradition to create something completely new. Ro’s ceramic work is also heavily influenced by Mexican folk art through colors, themes, and techniques.
As a second-generation ceramic artist, Ro is grateful to be a part of the strong folk art tradition of passing down knowledge within a family. Ro’s art combines serious themes with whimsy and humor.
Elyse Doyle-Martinez is a Chicana artist, educator, and youth advocate based in Woodland,California. Specializing in silkscreen and mural art, her work is a vibrant reflection of her cultural roots, academic journey, and commitment to youth and community empowerment. Elyse earned her Bachelor’s degree in Gender and Women’s Studies with an emphasis in Chicana/o Studies from California State University, Northridge, where she deepened her understanding of identity, social justice, and the transformative power of art. Whether working with youth, creating public art, or engaging in educational spaces, Elyse uses her platform to amplify voices, challenge perceptions, and cultivate community.
