Spotlight Artist 2025
Judy Knott, BA NCA MA
May 29–July 1.2025
Biography
Judy Knott is a self-taught artist who began taking lessons in 2008 while working full-time as a data analyst and program trainer in the medical field. In 2012 she started studying in earnest and went on to receive her Master Artist Certification from Sacramento Fine Arts Center in 2016. She has shown her work at the Crocker Art Museum, Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Northern California Arts and Art Expo Dallas. She has built her resume by competing in, and winning awards in both local, national, and international art shows.
Judy transitions easily between representational and abstract art although more recently has concentrated on mixed media abstracts. Her explorations have allowed her to use paper, fabric, thread, and cardboard along with paint and ink. Thus her artwork has a rich balance of color, texture and depth. Curator Nisa H. recently said of her art “Her newer work has a playful energy that lovers of abstract art can appreciate.”
Artist Statement
If you are not changing…there’s a good chance that you are stagnant, dying or already dead or just a rock in someone’s shoe. Ray Palla
I hope you see my latest work as evolving, showing my never ending need to explore and change. Displaying a desire to create something different, new and perhaps even exciting.
These latest pieces combine materials that appear disparate but that ultimately come together to create harmonious works of art. By integrating fiber, thread, paint, metal, paper and cardboard I’ve created a body of work that in the end has a cohesiveness, a unity you might not have thought possible. Bright colors contrast with monochromatic simplicity; soft fabrics bump up against hard edges; textures lie next to relative flatness. All these contrasts, variations and contradictions make life and art interesting. Ultimately the final goal is to not be a “rock in someone’s shoe.”
