Crackle and Glow: Raku Ceramics

Brigitte Chertok and Paula Bellacera

Naked raku, Brigitte’s choice, is a technique that uses all four elements – fire, earth, air and water. Producing this type of raku was very exciting. The smooth, silky burnished surface of naked raku mimics natural polished stone, which makes touching almost irresistible.

Paula’s raku masks echo ancient civilization's artistic celebration of animal spirits connection to humans. Another link to early cultures is their dependence on fire—also an essential to producing the unique quality of raku.

The unpredictability of this ceramic technique is exciting and sometimes unexpected. Raku is the art of imperfection.

Brushstrokes

IFour artists are exhibiting in Brushstrokes. Brushes, their common tool, empower these painters to express their unique visions. Landscapes are a common source of inspiration. Marie Therese Brown, a plein air artist, captures the atmosphere of every location she renders. Jerry De Camp uses mixed media to reveal the magic of Earth, water, fire, and air. Marlene Lee, a contemporary abstract artist, works in the alla prima style as she portrays pets, still life and landscapes. Thelma Weatherford paints abstracts, that can be interpreted as landscapes, with cold wax and oils.

The captivating scenes in our gallery will tempt you to explore your own favorite landscapes.

Creative Learning with Clay

This exhibit coincides with the Davis Clay Conference

Judy Catambay, local artist and art instructor for Davis schools, showcases student ceramic work from Willett Elementary School.

Students learn creatively through clay by exploring various hand-building techniques, art styles, and discovering their own artistic voices. Lessons in clay are designed to spark curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world.

The Artery’s four artists who work with fabric and thread are Ardith Gray, Marjan Kluepfel, Cindy Nelson, and Rebecca Stein-Wexler.
